Poor attic ventilation is the #1 killer of asphalt roofs. Heat buildup in an under-ventilated attic bakes shingles from below, accelerating granule loss and cracking. The fix is ensuring adequate soffit and ridge ventilation — a job for a roofing professional.
Ice dams in cold climates form when heat escapes through the roof deck, melts snow, and the water refreezes at the cold eave. The resulting ice forces water under shingles and into the attic. Proper insulation and ventilation prevent ice dams.
Algae and moss growth accelerates shingle deterioration. Black streaking (Gloeocapsa magma algae) is cosmetic initially but damages shingles over time. Zinc or copper strips at the ridge inhibit growth. Algae-resistant shingles are worth the small premium in humid climates.
